Mercedes Unveils 2014 SLS AMG Black Series

Following months of intense speculation about its existence, Mercedes has taken the veil of secrecy off the latest addition to the Black Series family – the 2014 SLS AMG Black Series.  This car is expected to take on the likes of the Audi R8 GT as well as the best from Lamborghini and Ferrari.

As is the case with other Black Series edition models, The SLS AMG Black Series has benefited from an extensive weight shedding program as well as an increase in horsepower. In this case, the SLS AMG Black Series marks the final performance for AMG’s legendary 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8, which is being axed to make room for the newer 5.5 liter twin turbo V8 for better fuel efficiency and torque. However, those afraid think the 6.2 liter is going out with a whimper will be pleased to hear that the 6.2 liter V8 will depart from this world with a very big bang. Overall horsepower has increased to a solid 622 horsepower and a stout 468 lb ft of torque. which helps the SLS AMG Black Series make the sprint from 0 to 60 in a scant 3.5 seconds before topping out at a top speed of 196 mph. In addition to the increase in horsepower, the rev limit for the potent engine has also increased to an otherworldly 8,000 rpm. All of this new-found muscle is channeled through an upgraded version of AMG’s familiar 7-speed dual clutch transmission which allows the new model to improve both performance and efficiency.

To ensure that the SLS AMG Black Series delivers the world class handling talents that are expected of a proper Black Series model, AMG engineers have stiffened the car’s suspension, added an electronically controlled rear differential unit and other modifications which should please those that regularly take their cars to the track. Further helping this cause is an extensive weight shedding that shaves 154 pounds versus that of the standard SLS thanks to items such as ceramic brakes (which trim 35.3 pounds), the titanium exhaust system that sheds another 28.7 pounds, and the creative use of a lightweight lithium ion battery which knocks off another 17.6 pounds of extra weight.

The company claims that many of the styling elements found on the 2014 SLS AMG Black Series were inspired by their GT3 race car, with elements such as the unique forged alloy wheels, front chin spoiler, vented side skirts and a reworked front fascia doing their part to make the Black Series stand out from the rest of the SLS lineup. The race-oriented design theme follows through to the interior where a prominent sport steering wheel (complete with red 12’0 clock marking) and numerous exposed carbon fiber accents enhance the experience of driving the SLS AMG Black Series even further.

Look for the SLS AMG Black Series to make its official debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show later this month with the first examples thundering their way to a Mercedes dealership near you next summer. In the meantime Mercedes has released a brief video of the car in motion which can be seen below
