Autosavant Weekend News Digest: We’ll Always Have Paris

Amid economic woes, uprisings and political dissidents, and election season, the display of concept cars and production vehicles shown at the Paris Motor Show proves that automobile enthusiasts still have a reason to be excited.  The City of Light, which only hosts an auto exhibition every two years, showcased some of Europe’s hottest, upcoming models.

Since Autosavant’s European correspondent was apparently on holiday during the show’s media days, here is our takeaway of some of the most noteworthy, production-bound cars:

  • Jaguar F-type: Jag’s long-awaited competitor to the current slate of German roadsters, including the range of Mercedes SLK models. It’s gorgeous. It will be exclusive. Its base model will carry a price tag of nearly 70 large. Jaguar where you can build one and share it with your friends. We want one already.
  • Mazda 6: Fifteen years ago, the buyer’s market was rife with generic, jellybean-shaped midsize sedans. Today, thanks to an advancement in design across the board, models like the 2013 Ford Fusion and the 2014 Mazda 6 offer style and substance. The 6 lineup comprises a sedan and a wagon, which we hope will both cross the Atlantic, although we’re holding our breath for the diesel 6 wagon promised for Europe and Asia.
  • McLaren P1: McLaren was mum to release specific details on the powertrain for the MP4-12C’s future, more powerful sibling. When it finally hits the road, the spiritual successor to McLaren’s F1 will be rumored to have approximately 600 horsepower.
  • Range Rover: If it looks like the Range Rover’s design is verging dangerously on the generic side, fear not: it will be more capable and luxurious than ever. What you won’t notice immediately is that Land Rover’s halo car went on a significant diet — to the tune of 1000 pounds.
  • Volkswagen Golf/GTI: That sound you just heard, which reverberated around the world, was the landing of the next generation of Volkswagen’s bread and butter model. Keeping similar dimensions to the current model, though also significantly lighter where it counts, the seventh-generation Golf and GTI will debut for the 2014 model year.
